Beware of Paraffin Candles!

The American Chemical Society recently did a study on the harmful effects of paraffin candles which contain dangerous toxins that you breathe in while burning the candles. Below is a short article about it for those of you who weren't aware. Soy candles are a healthier alternative. :)

Burning candles made from paraffin wax –– the most common kind used to infuse rooms with romantic ambiance, warmth, light, and fragrance –– is an unrecognized source of exposure to indoor air pollution, including the known human carcinogens, scientists reported here today. Levels can build up in closed rooms, and be reduced by ventilation, they indicated in a study presented at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

In the study, R. Massoudi Ph.D., and Amid Hamidi , Ph.D., said that that candles made from bee’s wax or soy, although more expensive, apparently are healthier. They do not release potentially harmful amounts of indoor air pollutants while retaining all of the warmth, ambience and fragrance of paraffin candles (which are made from petroleum).

“An occasional paraffin candle and its emissions will not likely affect you,” Hamidi said. “But lighting many paraffin candles every day for years or lighting them frequently in an un-ventilated bathroom around a tub, for example, may cause problems.“ Besides the more serious risks, he also suggested that some people who believe they have an indoor allergy or respiratory irritation may in fact actually be reacting to air pollutants from burning candles.

Yes, I do still have to buy certain things from stores but when I'm able to order something special that I know has had a lot of time and love put into it, it makes the gift even more meaningful. I received my very first Spotted Box today in the mail...I was so ecstatic to open it up & see all of the goodies inside. It is a great box this month & I'm proud to be a member of the team. May was my first contribution with my tealights. I look forward to doing it again in July!

My favorite sample was from Monkey Tree Creations because I have a HUGE sinus cold right now & their Cold and Allergy was the perfect remedy to soothe my stuffy head & nose. Thank you!

This is my first official Buzzabee blog post…thank you for reading & following! I’m slowly getting the word out about my soy candles. I recently promoted my candles and magnetic bookmarks at the Knoxville Creative Hands Etsy Team show in Knoxville on May 16th & 17th . We had a great turn out & ALM Photo (http://www.almphoto.com/) took some fabulous photos (below) of the other great work there made by our Etsy team members. I can’t wait for a fall/Christmas show later this year!
